World War II
Adolf Hitler, although he was a jew himself when he came to power in Germany, was bent on turning Germany into a non Jewish society. He conquered many European countries including France and Sweden and sent many Jews to work camps. Those who were too young or too old to work were put to death by being sent to what the Germans called a shower room, but was really a room they filled with poisonous gas, killing them instantly. Those working in work camps were faced with poor living conditions, bad food, and hard work with no rest, where many people died of sickness. The United States worked hard with Britain to free the countries in Hitler's control.
One cartoonist, Bill Mauldin, made cartoons that were very popular back then, showing the average solider's life as it really was. He was born in New Mexico in 1921. He joined the United States Army in 1940 at the age of nineteen. In 1944 he became a full time cartoonist for Stars and Stripes magazine and began creating his Willie and Joe cartoons. Many soliders accused him of causing less dicipline among soliders, while others argued that he portrayed the solider's life as it really was. He died at age 81 in 2002.
